Don’t be Scared to Drive
This was my first time driving in a foreign country… and I’m thrilled to report that it was not difficult! Italians drive on the right side and road signs were relatively easy to understand. If you were still on the fence about renting a car, then please take this as your sign to pull the trigger!
Make sure you book ahead of time if you need an automatic car and A/C. The most common car to rent is a manual car without A/C! Also, please get an International Driving Permit here if you do rent a car. It is not required for every rental company but it is necessary if you end up dealing with any traffic stops or car issues.
The highways are easy to navigate but try your best to stick to the speed limit! There are radar guns and zones where you’ll get fined, so avoid speeding and some one way roads. If you want more detailed information: https://mominitaly.com/driving-in-italy/
KEEP A FEW EUROS IN THE CAR FOR TOLL ROADS! You can avoid toll roads in Tuscany if you adjust the settings on your navigation, however, it may take you through some winding roads.
The drive through Tuscany is smooth and straightforward, however the road leading up to the venue is unpaved. Please note that local roads are dirt and gravel. My rental car did not sustain any damage during my stay but I do recommend getting insurance for the peace of mind.
Roads can be very narrow in cities and towns. So if you plan on extending your vacation outside of Tuscany, you most likely won’t need your car.
Get ready for stunning vistas as you drive through Tuscany. This is a sneak peak of the Colle Massari Tenuta di Montecucco (one of the hotels we recommended.)
